The beef and hogs were butchered yearly and Laura canned the eat, the sausage in tins sealed with red sealing wax and an S on the lid. It wasn’t unusual for her to can 100 quarts of fruit or vegetables in a day during the summer, sometimes using a gasoline stove in teh summer kitchen in the wood shed. A majestic east iron range with two warming overs and a hot water reservoir was the usual cooking stove. Teakettles and that reservoir provided hot water as needed. And soft soap on the bottom for cooking pots put next to the fire to hurry the cooking meant the blakc could just be wiped off.

When this house was built in 1892, they’d planned to have a bathroom with a well for the water and a windmill to pump it. A Mr. Rogets brought his machinery to drill, it got stuck and is still in the limestone, so no bathroom until about 1926 when a Deleo plant and a large cistern made both inside plumbing and electric lights posisble.

Four barns burned down during John and Laura’s lifetimes, 2 by lightening and 2 started by thrashing machine sparks. A fifth barn on the farm north (now a part of the IU golf course) was struck by lightening. John was badly burned one of those times when he went back too many times trying to save things.”
